Standard door handle height. The international building code provides a standard for a doorknob height. This is a 36 wide x 94 tall decorative wood entry door that is not a slab it has panels and glazing in specific areas. Installers typically drill the hole centered 36 inches above the floor if not specifically instructed to do so differently. Door handles pulls latches locks and other operating devices shall be installed 34 inches 864 mm minimum and 48 inches 1219 mm maximum above the finished floor.

This height is measured from a finished floor. The code requires that the height of a doorknob above the floor is approximately between 34 and 48 inches. It however suggests that if the door leads to a swimming pool the doorknob be placed 48 to 54 inches from the finished floor. Subsection 3 4 manual door hardware states that door handles should be at a minimum height of between 0 9 and 1 0 meters from the floor surface to provide a comfortable way for wheelchair users to open a door. Sub zero stainless steel door handles are typically mounted 1 1 2 from the handle side of the door or top of the drawer.

The door knob would sit at approximately 4 0 from the ground. If the door is used for an entrance to a swimming pool the doorknobs are however suggested to place 48 to 54 inches above the floor. Fortunately the standards for ada door handle height are not much different than traditional recommendations. Overlay panels must be a minimum of 5 8 thick to support mounting the handle.

This may vary slightly depending on the size and design of the door as well as the room where they will be installed. The height of the door handle is not so much the problem as the door handle itself. All handles pulls latches locks and other operable parts of the door should measure between 34 inches and 48 inches above the floor. The code prescribes that the height of a doorknob be approximately between 34 and 48 inches from a finished floor.

The handle may be set off center however it will make the drawer harder to open.
